Keep the useful assumptions beside the result
This tool uses one defined replacement scenario: architectural asphalt and ordinary removal of one shingle layer in the Kansas City metro. It supports 1,500 to 3,500 square feet of roof surface. Keep the example if the roof has not been measured; the inspection can establish the project’s actual scope.

Calculate an asphalt roof planning budget
Use known roof surface where available. The footprint option applies only the geometric pitch conversion. A low-slope roof, another material or a size beyond the supported range needs its own roofing conversation.
Keep the 2,000 sq. ft. example, or enter an area you already know. Roof footprint means the area covered, not total living space.
Keep the 6:12 example unless you already know the pitch. Pitch helps check material suitability.
Planning budget example
Planning example for 2,000 sq. ft. of actual roof surface, using architectural asphalt shingles. Ordinary tear-off is included.
An architectural-asphalt planning range with ordinary one-layer tear-off. Decking, complex details, unusual access and municipal charges can change the final project price.

What this planning budget includes
This October 2026 Kansas City metro model uses $4 to $6 per square foot of measured roof surface for architectural asphalt, within a supported 1,500 to 3,500-square-foot range. The default 2,000-square-foot roof gives an $8,000 to $12,000 planning budget.
The ordinary scope includes removal of one shingle layer, synthetic underlayment, eave and valley protection, flashing where needed, ridge venting and haul-away. Damaged decking, unusual roof details, access constraints, permit charges and project-specific changes require a separate allowance.
Known roof surface is the preferred input. If you choose footprint, the tool converts it geometrically using the entered pitch. It does not apply a made-up steep-roof price multiplier. This residential asphalt model does not price repairs, metal, coatings or commercial membranes.
What your calculator result covers
The result has the same scope as the cost guide, without added material rates or hidden multipliers.
| Included in the model | Needs a project-specific allowance |
|---|---|
| Architectural asphalt and ordinary one-layer removal | Metal, repairs, membranes and coatings |
| Synthetic underlayment and eave/valley protection | Damaged decking or an unusual assembly |
| Flashing where needed, ridge venting and haul-away | Complex details, restricted access, fees and other project changes |
Roof calculator FAQs
What if my roof area is outside the supported range?
The tool withholds a budget because the regional evidence does not support that size. Contact us about the property rather than extending the rate to a different scope.
Do I need to measure the roof?
No. Keep the example or use an area you already know. Do not climb onto the roof to use this tool.
Why is there only one material?
The available regional model supports architectural asphalt. Other materials need separate evidence and a project scope; inventing a menu of rates would make the result less useful.
